The riders take advantage of a short downhill to pick up speed to help them grunt and groan their way up the driveway. Didn’t York get the memo that all driveways needed to be flattened out by our arrival day? Nonetheless, Joe, AJ, and even Doc successfully climbed the drive and didn’t leave behind any body parts.

Lucy, a feisty 94-year old, puts the squeeze on Little Joe’s hands after he planted a big old smooch on her cheek. Lucy spent the next 3 hours trying to sanitize her face.

Doc has the audience mesmerized with his dramatic story of how he, Moses, and Noah survived that big flood back in the day and how Noah used some of the leftover wood from his boat to make Doc’s first leg.

AJ’s hair stands on end when she receives her spelling bee word for the day: Mississippi…her response was, “Well, butter my butt and call me a biscuit! I done lived in ‘sippi way back when. Here’s how yall spell it. M-I-crooked letter-crooked letter-I-crooked letter-crooked letter-I-humpback-humpback-I.” The audience was more confused than impressed.

Michelle is not only a fabulous mom, she’s also a jungle gym for her 2 kids!

Usually the boys save the best for last and that is AJ. However, today her awesomeness was easily trumped by Michelle who is a double above-knee amputee and only has a small portion of her hands which are all the result of a bacterial infection in 2006. She is also the mom of two rambunctious kids that love their mom very much! Michelle has learned that accepting help is just another part of life and that miracles really do happen! Seeing her stand up and walk up to the microphone to tell her story is a testament to her resolve and we wish her well in all her future endeavors!

Tommy had trouble speaking today. It seems that, after following AJ’s southern drawl, he came out with a mixed accent of part Pennsylvania and part Jawja which totally perplexed the audience. AJ understood most all of it and was just excited to be able to talk southern at someone that understands what she says.

Here is a photo taken of everyone posing with three cardboard cutouts of Joe, Doc, and AJ.  Too bad the cutouts were facing the wrong way from the camera.

We’ve finally found someone that has a shirt small enough to fit Little Joe. Clearly, our young friend shops at Gymboree just like him!

AJ schmoozes with Al, who earned the official title of “stinker of the day.” Al’s attitude is definitely in the right place and he will be an inspiration to others long after we’ve gone.

Our thanks to Mark Freeburn, CEO, Courtney Stoner, DMO, Monica Krueger, Eileen, and so many others who made our visit a wonderful success.  We apologize to the patient who believed Joe who had stolen a PT id card was on the up and up stating that HealthSouth was instituting a new policy of pay as you go (in cash) therapy and that beginning today, patients can choose their therapy off of an ala carte menu.  (Does Joe really have to return the money???).  Thanks to the large number of vendors who came, The Rose radio station, and the York Towne Inn who gave generously.  And finally thank you to the therapists and patients who put up with our antics in the gym and whose selfless efforts every day are responsible for changing the lives of their patients. We are looking forward to our return visit in 2012.
