Visitation at HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Greater Pittsburgh
|
![]() Ah, our glorious day started at 9 even though we didn’t have to make our appearance until noon. We spent at least 47 hours in a mall parking lot waiting on our fearless, tech-junkie Joe who scheduled major cell phone surgery for this morning. As we blazed down the highway (without Joe’s lifeline/cell phone) in the wrong direction, poor Ann was busy having a slight coronary when we weren’t there 2 hours early and Joe didn’t answer his phone. We finally arrived at HealthSouth
Rehabilitation Hospital of Greater Pittsburgh in Monroeville with only
minutes to spare and in just enough time to spare Ann from having a total
mental breakdown on the spot. Without enough time to unload the truck and
wheel in our rolling basket of rubber bands, we were off to conquer the
mighty 45-second trek. |
![]() As the crowd clapped with merriment, we rolled in and proceeded to a reception with patients, staff, friends, and support group members. Joe, Luke, and AJ told of their trials and triumphs while the electricity blinked off and on. Luke was very excited to hear that picnic style food was served immediately after so he kept his speech short and tried to bribe AJ to do the same.

![]() ![]() Lunch ended and the trio of borderline insane meandering amputees wandered the halls in search of the screams of terror often heard in the physical torture (whoops, therapy) gym. They visited, signed posters, and tried to rustle up a quick game of wheelchair rugby. When that attempt failed, they visited a few patients in their natural HealthSouth habitats. All were uplifted by those visited. Though this was a small facility, there was a unique quality about the patients. With bright eyes and a determined spirit, they strived to reach the little goals they have set for themselves. |

As the day drew to a close, Joe retrieved his umbilical cord/cell phone and we proceeded to have a relaxing dinner and casually process the day’s events. While the visit today was short, the stories we heard and the people we met were as inspiring as any we’ve experienced along the way.
Our thanks to Cindy Eiseman, CEO,
for her gracious hospitality and all that she and her staff have done to
make our visit a memorable one. We enjoyed the visiting with the
amputee support group and patients and hope we brightened the day for each
of those we visited.
